Whether you're commuting through Berlin, touring the Pacific Coast Highway, or crossing the Alps on a summer weekend, one thing stays the same: the fewer times your hand leaves the bar, the better. That's what the Wonder Wheel is for — and this guide shows you exactly how to use it with your R7M.
💡 Note: The Wonder Wheel functions described here are exclusive to the R7M. The R7X does not support Wonder Wheel input because it does not connect to the BMW Nav Cradle.
This is the single most important step, and the one riders miss most often.
Your BMW's Multi-Controller (the cluster that contains the Wonder Wheel and the MENU button) can operate in two different modes:
By default, the Multi-Controller is often in TFT mode. If your R7M isn't responding to the Wonder Wheel, this is almost always why.
How to switch to NAV mode:
💡 Tip: You may need to press MENU multiple times to cycle to NAV mode, depending on your BMW model. If you're not sure which mode you're in, press MENU once, try the Wonder Wheel, and switch again if needed.
Once you're in NAV mode, the actions below take effect.
Long push left or right on the Wonder Wheel → switches between the R7M's main display pages (e.g., RN OS Dashboard → CarPlay/Android Auto).
Use this action anytime you want to navigate between the R7M's core screens (e.g., RN OS Dashboard, CarPlay / Android Auto, System Settings).
The Wonder Wheel's behavior depends on whether Vertical Scrolling is enabled or disabled in your R7M settings. This gives you two different control profiles depending on your preference.

📞 Call control takes priority. During an active call, the Wonder Wheel's answer/hang-up actions override other functions — including the Menu button confirm. See the "Call Control via Wonder Wheel" section above for details.
Call handling has its own dedicated logic that works across most R7M screens — and it takes priority over everything else.

⚠️ Important — priority behavior: During an active call, the call control logic takes priority over all other Wonder Wheel actions. You cannot use the Menu button to confirm a selection while a call is in progress. To use other Wonder Wheel controls again, first end the call.
This priority rule ensures that when a call is active, riders can always end or manage the call quickly — no matter what else is on screen.
You can enable or disable Vertical Scrolling in the R7M's Settings menu:

Q: My Wonder Wheel isn't controlling the R7M. What should I check?
Q: What's the difference between TFT and NAV mode on my BMW?
Your BMW Multi-Controller can send commands to either the bike's TFT instrument cluster (TFT mode) or to a navigation device in the Nav Cradle (NAV mode). Press the MENU button to switch between them. When TFT mode is active, the Wonder Wheel adjusts your dashboard. When NAV mode is active, the Wonder Wheel controls your R7M. Only one mode can be active at a time.
Q: Do all BMW models support the Wonder Wheel?
Wonder Wheel input is available on BMW motorcycles equipped with an OEM Nav Cradle (Nav Prep 5 or Nav Prep 6). This includes most modern R 1300/1250/1200 GS, F 900/850/750 GS, S 1000 XR, R 1250 RT, K 1600 GT/GTL, and similar models. If your BMW has a Nav Cradle, you have Wonder Wheel support.
Q: Can I customize which Wonder Wheel action does what?
The current firmware provides two profiles (Vertical Scrolling On / Off) as shown above. Fully customizable action mapping is a feature we're evaluating for a future OTA update.
Q: Is there a way to control volume with the Wonder Wheel?
Volume is currently controlled via the R7M's on-screen controls or through your paired headset. Volume mapping on the Wonder Wheel is under evaluation for a future firmware update.
Q: Why doesn't the Menu button confirm my selection during a phone call?
This is by design. During an active call, the Wonder Wheel switches into dedicated call control mode — short push right accepts the call or plays/pauses music, short push left hangs up the call. Menu button confirm and other actions are temporarily disabled to prevent accidental input during the call. Once the call ends, all normal Wonder Wheel behaviors return automatically.
