Japan's Radio Act — Why It's So Strict

Japan's Radio Act (enacted 1950) is one of the strictest wireless communication regulations in the world. Given Japan's high population density and heavy use of wireless devices, uncontrolled radio emissions could seriously interfere with critical systems like fire, ambulance, weather radar, and air traffic control.

For this reason, every device that emits radio waves — including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth — must be certified as compliant with technical standards set by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC / 総務省). Certified devices carry the Giteki Mark, which authorizes their legal use in Japan.

Penalties for using non-certified devices:

Under Article 110 of the Radio Act:

Up to 1 year imprisonment or up to 1 million JPY fine

What is DFS?

Modern high-speed Wi-Fi uses the 5GHz band for greater bandwidth. However, some 5GHz frequencies (W53 / W56) are shared with weather radar and air traffic radar. Without protection, Wi-Fi devices operating in these bands could interfere with radar operations.

DFS (Dynamic Frequency Selection) solves this by detecting radar signals and automatically switching to a different frequency. DFS certification requires passing actual radar detection tests — it's not just a paperwork exercise.

Why RiderNav Certified Independently for Japan

RiderNav R7M and R7X are 7-inch displays designed for global markets. But Japan's Radio Act is notably stricter than most countries — using an overseas-market unit in Japan could constitute a Radio Act violation.

To give Japanese riders true peace of mind, we invested in independent certification:

  1. Design compliance with Japan's Radio Act technical standards
  2. Giteki Mark certification through MIC-approved certification bodies
  3. DFS certification including full radar detection testing
  4. Japan domestic distribution — every unit sold in Japan is certified

[Important] Configuring Wi-Fi Frequency in Japan

Wi-Fi frequency band selection is available on firmware version 1.5.3 or later. Please confirm your device is on the latest firmware first.

Step 1 — Check and update firmware:

Settings → System → Firmware Update

Step 2 — Access DFS Channel Switching:

Settings → Features → DFS Channel Switching

Step 3 — Choose your frequency band:

  • 2.4GHz — widest compatibility and range
  • 5GHz (W52) — high speed, no DFS required
  • 5GHz (W56) — high speed, DFS-enabled

💡 Our recommendation: The 5GHz band delivers the best performance. When using in Japan, please comply with local regulations by selecting either the W52 or W56 band. This ensures full compliance with Japan's Radio Act.

A Note on Overseas Imports

Buying overseas-market units for use in Japan may seem cheaper, but comes with real risks:

  • Radio Act violation (up to 1 year imprisonment or 1M JPY fine)
  • No official Japan-based support
  • Warranty may not be valid in Japan
  • Potential interference with weather and air traffic radar

For use in Japan, always choose the Giteki-certified Japan domestic model.
